How to setup your website in google analytics

 What is google analytics

Google Analytics is a Google service that provides statistics on the use of your website or application. From things as basic as how many people visit you each day to more interesting details such as the most viewed internal pages, abandonment pages, average visit time or real-time statistics. In this article I will teach you how to integrate Google Analytics to your website.

1. Create an account

Go to analytics.google.com and sign in with your Google account. There is no higher science.

2. Understanding Google Analytics

Google Analytics has three levels for data:

Account Accounts are groupings of properties, their sole purpose is to organize properties by groups.

Property Each property is a website or an application. You must create a new property for each new site or application.

View Each view is a custom statistics report. By default, Analytics creates an account with as much data as possible, but you could create new views to show only the data you're interested in.

You can add new users to share access to your data to accounts, properties, or views (depending on the level of access you want to give them).

3. Add your website

The first time you enter Google Analytics, a wizard will help you set up your site or application. However, since you already understand the concepts of the previous point, the process will be easier for you (and when you want to add new sites). In this step you only have to fill in the data in the form and click on the Get Tracking ID button (you must scroll to the bottom of the page).

My configuration looks like this:

Analytics then asks you to accept the terms of service and finally provides you with your Tracking ID (1), Status (2), and the code that you need to embed on all pages of your website (3).

You must include this code within the HTML of your site, within the <head> tag. Keep in mind that you must include it on ALL the pages of your site. If you use a template engine, just add it to the base template and you're good to go. Once you've added the tracking code, Analytics will start showing you data in views. It may take a while, so be patient the first time.

4. Add new websites or apps

If your account already has properties (see point 2), you will no longer have access to the wizard that appears the first time, in this case, go to configuration (lower left corner) and then you will be able to create new accounts, properties or views.

5. Where do I find the tracking code?

If for some reason you need the tracking code again, you must go to Manage as in the previous case and, remembering the theory, a website is a property. So go to the property and look for Tracking Information.

Conclusion

At first it can be confusing to enter Google Analytics, but once you understand that everything is organized in Accounts, Properties and Views you will see that everything is easier. In future posts we will explore this tool more.
