4 Advantages of an International Baccalaureate (IB) when Applying to Foreign Universities

Second In most cases it is a two-year educational program that offers an internationally accepted certification , which is recognized by universities around the world. In turn, it is taught in more than 140 countries, either in English, French or Spanish.

To access this program, you must attend a school certified by the IB organization and complete established assignments within its various programs such as Language and Literature, where they will focus on the native language of the country in which the school is located; Language acquisition, where they can choose an additional language, including Latin and classical Greek; Individuals and societies, where they will study Business, Economics, Geography, History, Philosophy and Anthropology; Science, Art and Mathematics.

Upon successful completion of the program and all of its requirements, you will be able to earn your IB diploma , which is an important credential for college applications and other purposes. Being internationally recognized, you will be one step away from being able to study at the university of your dreams.

Earning the IB diploma means that you have completed a particular type of secondary education that is meant to teach you not only history, math, and other subjects, but also how to better analyze and understand the information you will find in college and beyond.

In order for you to learn more about this topic, in the following article we explain the benefits of having an International Baccalaureate.

Table of Contents

1. Determine your student position internationally

A particular advantage of the IB program is that it is often used as an international standard measurement tool, not only in the process of entering the university , but also once you are there. Your IB score makes your application more comparable to other international students.

For example, depending on the university, you may be placed in higher-level courses as a result of your IB experience, or you may receive direct credit for the IB. This will allow you to save time and money.

Colorado and Texas have passed laws requiring universities in those states to award college credit to students with IB diplomas. There are many universities that will recognize your IB and where you can take some courses!

2. Facilitate your admission to European universities

The international recognition of the IB diploma can facilitate your admission to European universities. France, Italy, India and Turkey are countries that accept students who have taken an International Baccalaureate. Some universities even offer scholarships specifically for IB diploma holders.

Remember that European universities have programs that generally last 3 years and to access these it is necessary to have 12 years of study at your school or an equivalent such as the IB.  If you do not have this equivalent, the university may ask you to do a "Foundation Year" or foundation year before you can start your university program.

 3. It is an Intellectually Enriching Experience

Aside from concerns related to the university admissions process, earning your IB diploma can simply be a very fulfilling intellectual experience in its own right.  This is because it is not only designed to provide you with rigorous course content, but also to help you learn to think and analyze in ways that your university will eventually expect.

Independent projects that are part of the IB curriculum can also be fun.  Some high school students don't get many opportunities to focus their energies on things they find interesting.  Studying a subject that really moves you can bring out the best in your intellectuality.

 4. It has a Distinctive Character

IB courses at a certified high school limit the number of students who can participate.  If you participate in the program and successfully pass it, obtaining your International Baccalaureate certification, you will be among a relatively small part of the group of university applicants with this qualification.

This distinction shows that you have not only taken on academic challenges, but that you have done so through a program that is widely known for its reputation and rigor and that requires a great deal of independent work from its graduates.  Not all students are able to present such a prestigious qualification when completing their college applications, and this relative uniqueness is a plus.

In addition to the novelty of IB participation itself, certain elements of the IB Diploma Program may provide you with the opportunity to do particularly interesting and original academic work that will provide you with additional opportunities to differentiate yourself from other applicants.
